I also talk to adults on ways to reach reluctant readers (I will be presenting this topic at a workshop at the ALA meeing in Chicago in 2013). You're right about the humor. It is important that we make them realize reading is FUN, and hand them books and stories they don't have to strain to read until they absorb that message.
