The New York Times has two good editorials on education today, here and here. The first one raises questions about the wisdom of the Common Core Standards, and the second is a plea for recognizing that children learn best when they are emotionally engaged. I think both are excellent. I couldn't resist commenting on the first one:
You want reading scores to soar? Help students fall in love with books. Avid readers score high. Kids who read only
what they have to, if that, do not.
The Common Core standards are, unfortunately, not likely to
produce avid readers. Au contraire.
