Importance of Preschool

David Brooks has a good op-ed piece in the New York Times here supporting President Obama's call for universal access to preschool.  The comments mentioned how preschool helps children:

I would be really curious to have a study done on the parents of poor children who are given the chance to attend an enriched preschool.

Thank about it.   The parents, when they are dropping their children off and picking them up, are seeing rooms filled with books and toys, and are talking with teachers who have been trained to deal with small children.  I'm sure they are invited for programs and for parent-teacher conferences.  For many, it may be a new vision of how one should treat small children.

In addition, these parents now have a safe, nurturing place to leave their children.  I bet that makes them more likely to find, and keep, a job.  Knowing their children are well cared for would make a tremendous difference in their peace of mind, and emotional energy.  It might even help save marriages.
