Graduation Rates and Reading

US News has an article describing the growth in the high school graduation rate here which is now 78.2 percent.  The goal is to get it to 90 percent by 2020.

This is, of course, very good.  But reading scores have budged very little over the last forty years, and my experience as a high school English teacher makes me believe that advanced reading skills are the real sign of an educated person. They are the foundation of all other learning.  And the only students I had with really sophisticated reading skills were the avid readers.

Instead of pouring so much money into testing, and common core curriculum, and technology, we need to work on developing a love of reading in kids.
