Reading in Mexico and Here

The New York Times today has a wonderful op-ed here by David Toscana titled: The Country That Stopped Reading.  He blames Mexico's low reading scores on an education system that devalues reading.

I wish we had policy makers here who had the same understanding.  Educators and policy makers here give lip service to the old mantra that "reading is fundamental" but, with all of the required testing and curriculum, make it almost impossible for teachers to spend the time necessary to develop a love of reading in their students.
